Quinte Heritage: An Open Letter from Captain John Walden Meyers

DougKnutson

Greetings my fellow citizens,

My name is Johannes Waltimeyer – or perhaps you have better heard of me as Captain John Walden Meyers. I was born along the Hudson River in 1745 – my parents were immigrants from Germany. With my wife “Polly” and 8 children, we became tenant farmers south of Albany and had hoped to live quiet and productive lives there.

But our lives were overturned by – Revolution! We wanted to stay out of it – but could not. After many agonizing days and nights of indecision and terror, I finally joined the effort to put down the illegal and infernal rebellion. I became a Captain in the Provincial Corps of the British Army. And once committed, I gave the Cause my heart and soul! I became a recruiter for the Crown, a courier, spy and guerrilla-fighter. Swooping into their homes by night, I put fear into the hearts of those damned rebels! Legends grew about me – mothers around Albany would tell their children to behave lest they be EATEN by Captain Meyers!!

Quinte Heritage: Quinte is People Rich

Anne Elspeth Rector

Article on Quinte History compliments of the Intelligencer.ca

In 1615, Hurons led French explorer Samuel de Champlain, down the Trent-Severn River into the Bay of Quinte (assumed through today’s Quinte West).

It’s plausible Champlain scaled Mount Pelion; savvy explorers seek ideal vantages to survey the countryside. Climb Mount Pelion’s lookout tower -Canada geese fly by at eye level, as jets depart the airbase.

By this period ‘the County’ was a hunting ground. No peoples lived here, but hunting parties passed by, as did Champlain and his Huron guides en route to battle with Iroquois, across Lake Ontario.

Tonight! A Chance to See a Rock Legend

Barbers Blog

I have to admit it; I am pretty stoked to be able to see Alice Cooper at Empire Rockfest in Belleville tonight.

It’s my virginal viewing of the absolute master of shock-rock, and I can’t wait to see which ways poor Alice gets dispatched. But I am also really looking forward to hearing the music. And that’s what it’s really all about.

Even Alice told me so.
